Vancouver Kids Fashion Week (VKFW) polished off the lively weekend with an inspiring range of local and international childrenswear designers, and incredible dance performances at the David Lam Hall in downtown Vancouver, during Vancouver Fashion Week March 18th - 24th, 2019.
Korean brand ROCKBEBE with their playful streetwear designs for kids. The motif for this collection was ‘harmony in mismatch’ as showcased by the colourful and lively patterns. The designers Mi Ra Kim and In Chul Kwak have mixed bright bold colours like neon pink and yellow, lime green, and black and white into striking checkered, plaid, stripe and zebra patterns in garments with overfit silhouettes. Their urban style collection transformed classic children’s clothing into eccentric pieces such as checkered denim jackets, leopard print coats, yellow tartan blazer sets, lemon yellow ponchos and a lime green jumpsuit fitted with orange pockets.
Vancouver-based brand Nihil presented its collection of comfortable children’s clothing by designer John Pfaff. Inspired by fun, this playful assortment of designs featured fun sequined prints, flowers, aliens, and bright colours. The clothes were made from a variety of soft materials perfect for kids, with bright, velvety dresses for special occasions and comfortable shirts and pants for casual wear.
Following the break, Stage One Academy entertained the audience with an energetic hip hop performance by a group of young performers, sporting bright silver shirts.
La Péronnelle featured their collection ‘Snowballs and Puddles’, inspired by the simple pleasures of Fall and Winter: splashing into puddles, walking on fallen leaves, and crawling into cold snow. The French designer Anaïs Chabagno is inspired by her outdoor lifestyle and aims to create easy-to-move-in garments from soft fabrics, resulting in pieces which reflect seasonal colours and allows children to play in all weather. The colourful palette included bold vibrant hues like adobe red, pumpkin orange, mustard yellow and royal blue with pops of lime green working its way in through pockets and embroidered braids. Featured garments included colour-blocked tiered jumpers, two-toned shirts, floral print leggings and overall dresses. The looks were accessorized with grey merino wool headbands and colourful gumboots.
During the break the audience was treated to a special performance by Vancouver kids dance group MiniBots, from NBC’s ‘World of Dance’. They fired up the room with their lively robotic hip-hop routine.
Closing the show, Korean brand KIPOP fused K-pop style and street fashion together to create a unique collection. KIPOP strives to make every city street a runway and every child a star. Showing over 40 looks, a wide range of styles were presented. Designer Kiri (Cha Youngshin) drew us in with edgy cargo pants, cropped hoodies, gingham and lace dresses, leather leggings and striped track pants. The garments were dominated by colour-blocked patterns of black and white with splashes of vivid reds, blues, purples and bubblegum pink. The looks were paired with dangling metal chains and buckles, knee socks, and beanies and berets. The show was interspersed with dance routines featuring the children in the cool clothes, resembling a mini K-pop group.
